What is it about slot machines that attract gamblers worldwide? Perhaps, it’s the anticipation as you watch each reel rotate around and around or maybe it’s the thrilling sound the machine makes as soon as you hit the jackpot!
Slot machines are also known as poker machines, slots or the one-armed bandit. The British call slot machines “fruit machines”. Slot machines have remained one of the most popular fixtures in casinos since the first slot machine called the Liberty Bell was invented way back in 1895. Some of the earliest slot machine payouts were ten nickels. That may seem like a paltry sum by today’s standards, but it was certainly a large sum of money back then!
In traditional slot machines, a player inserts a coin, token, bill, card or ticket and then presses a button or pulls a lever. At this point the reels of the machine rotate. If they land in the correct position, you end up winning! Because all older slot machines only had the lever located on the sign, they were often referred to as a “one-armed bandit”. The machines contain internal mechanisms that are able to detect the presence of counterfeit currency or foreign objects. This prevents players from dropping fake bills or pieces of metal into the slots, instead of actual currency.
Electronic slot machines began to appear in the mid 1960s. An individual named Bally invented slot machines called Money Honey that contained symbols from the Bell Fruit Gum company.
